AN/APS-135

Type
X-band (9,250 MHz centre frequency) Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR).

Description
The Motorola APS-135 SLAR is a variant of the company's AN/APS-131 radar that has been optimised for use on the USCG's HC-130H long-range surveillance aircraft. Designed for the detection of surface ships, sea ice and oil pollution, the system comprises port and starboard antenna assemblies, an antenna switching unit, a transceiver, a synchroniser, an amplifier, a Recorder/Processor/ Viewer (RPV) and a control unit. Looking at these in more detail, the set's antenna array comprises pod-mounted, port and starboard, 4.88 m long, yaw-stabilised, horizontally polarised, slotted waveguide units. The equipment's transceiver incorporates a magnetron transmitter and a low-noise receiver, while the synchroniser provides radar timing and control functions and generates longitude and latitude data (based on inputs from the host aircraft's inertial navigation system) for incorporation into the system's film imagery output. This is created within the RPV and involves the use of two Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) to impose the sensor's video onto dry silver film as it is passed in front of the faces of the CRTs. Typically, one of these handles the radar 'take' from the port array while the other is devoted to that from the standard antenna. Film development within the system is noted as taking approximately five minutes. Aside from the equipment's antennas, all the APS-135's electronics are pallet mounted for installation in the HC-130H.In terms of coverage, APS-135 can image an area of up to 200 km port and starboard of the host platform when both antennas are selected.
